↓ Full nutritionPeople cherish barley for its hearty, comforting texture and ability to absorb flavors in soups and stews. It's a versatile staple with deep roots in global cuisines, from European potages to Middle Eastern pilafs.
Its high fiber content can cause digestive discomfort like bloating if introduced too quickly; start with small portions and drink plenty of water. As a grain, it contains gluten and is unsafe for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.
Barley was one of the first grains cultivated by humans, with evidence of its use dating back to 8000 BCE in the Fertile Crescent.

Is pearled barley a whole grain?
No. While it retains the bran and germ, pearling removes the outer husk and polishes the grain, unlike hulled barley which is a true whole grain.
How does it differ from hulled barley?
Hulled barley is minimally processed with only the inedible outer husk removed, making it chewier and higher in fiber. Pearled barley is polished for quicker cooking and a softer texture.
Can I use it in place of rice?
Yes, but it has a chewier texture and nuttier flavor. It works well in pilafs, risottos, or as a base for grain bowls, though cooking times and liquid ratios will differ.
NRF9.3 index — Fulgoni, Keast & Drewnowski, 2009. Computed from USDA nutrients.
Composite of energy density (Rolls et al., 1999), protein & fiber satiety, minus sugar. A calculated heuristic — ranks satiety-per-calorie, not a clinical measure.
Sodium-to-potassium ratio: 0.03 (lower is better — aim for ≤ 1)
Sodium:potassium per WHO potassium guidance. Computed from USDA nutrients.
