Fish oil, cod liver

Photo: Wikipedia

Cod liver oil is a thick, golden-yellow oil extracted from the liver of Atlantic cod, known for its distinct, potent fishy aroma and smooth, oily texture. It is a concentrated source of fat-soluble vitamins A and D, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, making it a traditional nutritional supplement rather than a culinary cooking oil.

💚 Why it's loved

People value it as a traditional, potent nutritional supplement, especially in Northern European cultures where sunlight is scarce in winter, and for its historical role in supporting public health.

⚠️ Watch-outs & how to enjoy it better

Its strong, fishy taste and smell are off-putting to many, and it can cause fishy burps or digestive upset. Those on blood thinners (due to vitamin K content) or with fish allergies should be cautious; taking it with a meal can reduce aftertaste.

FAQ

Is cod liver oil the same as regular fish oil?
No. Cod liver oil is extracted specifically from the liver and is high in vitamins A and D. Regular fish oil (from flesh) is primarily a source of omega-3s without the high vitamin content.

Can I cook with cod liver oil?
It is not recommended for cooking or frying. Its high vitamin content can degrade with heat, and its strong flavor would overpower most dishes. It's best taken as a supplement or added to cold foods.

Why does it sometimes cause fishy burps?
The oil can reflux from the stomach. Taking it with a meal, freezing the capsules before ingestion, or choosing an enteric-coated version can minimize this effect.
