Infant formula is a carefully engineered, sterile liquid or powder designed to be the sole source of nutrition for a baby's first months. It has a mild, slightly sweet, milky taste and a smooth, thin liquid consistency when mixed. Nutritionally, it's a complete package, providing a precise balance of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates to mimic the composition of human milk.

↓ Full nutritionParents love it for the peace of mind it provides, knowing their baby is receiving scientifically formulated, complete nutrition. Its convenience and ability to be prepared by any caregiver make it a cornerstone of modern infant feeding.
Some critics note it lacks the dynamic, living antibodies and immune factors found in breast milk. For babies with cow's milk protein allergy, standard formulas can cause digestive distress and skin reactions; specialized hydrolyzed or amino acid-based formulas are required. Always consult a pediatrician before choosing or switching formulas.
The first commercial infant formula, invented in 1867 by Justus von Liebig, was a powdered mixture of cow's milk, wheat flour, malt, and potassium bicarbonate.

How is infant formula different from regular cow's milk?
Infant formula is modified to be more digestible for babies, with adjusted protein and fat profiles, and is fortified with essential nutrients like iron, folic acid, and vitamins that cow's milk lacks in sufficient quantities for infants.
Can I make my own infant formula at home?
No. Homemade formulas are extremely dangerous and nutritionally incomplete, posing serious risks of malnutrition, contamination, and electrolyte imbalances. Always use commercially prepared, FDA-approved infant formula.
How long can prepared formula be left out at room temperature?
For safety, prepared formula should be used within 2 hours at room temperature. After that, bacteria can multiply rapidly. Any formula left in a bottle after a feeding should be discarded within 1 hour.

Composite of energy density (Rolls et al., 1999), protein & fiber satiety, minus sugar. A calculated heuristic — ranks satiety-per-calorie, not a clinical measure.
