Ingredients
2 slices thick white bread
1 tbsp butter
1 tbsp all-purpose flour
1/2 cup milk
1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp dry mustard powder
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
Toast the bread slices until golden brown and set aside.
In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
Gradually whisk in milk and cook, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 2-3 minutes.
Reduce heat to low. Add grated cheese, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper. Stir until cheese is melted and sauce is smooth.
Preheat broiler. Place toasted bread on a baking sheet. Pour cheese sauce evenly over each slice.
Broil until bubbly and lightly browned, about 2-3 minutes. Serve immediately.
Tips
For a richer sauce, substitute half the milk with beer.
Serve with a side salad or pickled onions for contrast.
Leftover sauce can be refrigerated and reheated gently.
