Ingredients

- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 2 cups vegetable broth
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (optional)
- Salt to taste
- Fresh basil for garnish
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
- Add garlic, red pepper flakes, smoked paprika, and black pepper. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, vegetable broth, and sugar. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
- Use an immersion blender to puree the soup until smooth. (Alternatively, carefully blend in batches in a blender.)
- Stir in heavy cream if using, and season with salt to taste. Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil.
