Ingredients
1 lb ground beef (80/20)
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
1/2 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
1 clove garlic, minced
3/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon yellow mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
6 hamburger buns, split and toasted
Instructions
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef, onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook, breaking up the meat, until beef is browned and vegetables are tender, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat.
Stir in ketchup, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer.
Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens, about 10-15 minutes.
Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns. Cover with top halves and serve immediately.
Tips
For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a few dashes of hot sauce.
Leftover Sloppy Joe mixture can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
Toast the buns lightly under the broiler or in a dry skillet for extra texture.
