Ingredients
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pound ground beef (80/20)
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper
2 cloves garlic, minced
3/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon yellow mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
6 hamburger buns, split and toasted
Instructions
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned, about 5 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.
Add onion, bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are tender, about 3 minutes.
Stir in ketchup, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer.
Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 10 minutes.
Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns. Cover with the top halves and serve immediately.
Tips
For a thicker sauce, simmer an additional 5 minutes.
Leftover sloppy joe mixture can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
