Ingredients
1 cup (240ml) warm milk (110°F/43°C)
2 1/4 teaspoons (7g) active dry yeast
1 large egg
2 tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter, melted
2 tablespoons (25g) granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon (15ml) milk for brushing
1 tablespoon (15g) sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions
In a small bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
In a large bowl, whisk together egg, melted butter, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture and mix well.
Add flour, 1 cup at a time, stirring until a soft dough forms. Turn onto a floured surface and knead for 6-8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour until doubled.
Punch down dough and divide into 12 equal pieces (about 55g each). Shape each into a ball and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing 2 inches apart.
Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rise for 30-45 minutes until puffy.
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush buns with milk and sprinkle with sesame seeds if using.
Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Tips
For extra softness, brush buns with melted butter immediately after baking.
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month.
To reheat, wrap in foil and warm in a 350°F oven for 5-7 minutes.
