Ingredients
1 pound pizza dough, room temperature
2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
8 ounces sweet or hot Italian sausage, casings removed
1/2 cup pizza sauce
8 ounces shredded mozzarella cheese
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 500°F (260°C) with a pizza stone or inverted baking sheet inside for at least 30 minutes.
In a skillet over medium heat, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil. Add sliced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized, about 15 minutes. Season with salt and set aside.
In the same skillet, add remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil and sausage. Cook, breaking up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
On a floured surface, stretch or roll pizza dough into a 12-inch round. Transfer to a floured pizza peel or parchment paper.
Spread pizza sauce evenly over dough, leaving a 1-inch border. Top with mozzarella, then caramelized onions and cooked sausage. Sprinkle with red pepper flakes if desired.
Slide pizza onto preheated stone or baking sheet. Bake until crust is golden and cheese is bubbly, 10-12 minutes.
Let cool slightly, garnish with basil if desired, slice, and serve.
Tips
Use store-bought or homemade pizza dough; let it come to room temperature for easier stretching.
For extra flavor, use a mix of sweet and hot Italian sausage.
Leftover pizza can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in a hot oven or skillet.
