Ingredients
1 pound pizza dough, at room temperature
1/2 cup pizza sauce
8 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
4 ounces Italian sausage, casings removed
4 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Fresh basil leaves for garnish
Cornmeal for dusting
Instructions
Preheat oven to 500°F (260°C) with a pizza stone or inverted baking sheet inside for at least 30 minutes.
Divide dough into 2 equal pieces. On a floured surface, stretch each into a 12-inch round. Transfer to cornmeal-dusted parchment paper.
Spread half the sauce on each round, leaving a 1-inch border. Top with mozzarella slices.
In a skillet over medium heat, cook sausage, breaking it up, until browned, about 5 minutes. Remove and set aside. Add mushrooms to skillet and cook until golden, about 4 minutes.
Distribute sausage and mushrooms over pizzas. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle red pepper flakes if using.
Slide pizzas onto preheated stone or sheet. Bake until crust is golden and cheese is bubbly, 10-12 minutes. Garnish with basil before serving.
Tips
For extra flavor, use a mix of mushrooms like shiitake and oyster.
Let pizza rest 2 minutes before slicing to set the cheese.
Store leftover pizza in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat in a hot oven or skillet.
