Ingredients
1 pound pizza dough, store-bought or homemade
1/2 cup pizza sauce
8 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
2 Italian sausage links (about 6 ounces), casings removed
1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
Salt and black pepper to taste
Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 500°F (260°C) with a pizza stone or inverted baking sheet inside for at least 30 minutes.
Divide dough into two equal pieces. On a floured surface, stretch or roll each into a 12-inch round.
In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook sausage, breaking it into crumbles, until browned (about 5 minutes). Remove with a slotted spoon.
In the same skillet, add 1 tablespoon olive oil and sauté bell peppers and onion until softened (about 3 minutes). Season with salt and pepper.
Brush each dough round with remaining olive oil. Spread half the sauce on each, leaving a 1-inch border. Top with mozzarella, sausage, and pepper mixture. Sprinkle oregano.
Slide pizzas onto hot stone or baking sheet. Bake until crust is golden and cheese is bubbly (10-12 minutes).
Let cool 2 minutes, garnish with basil if desired, slice, and serve.
Tips
For a crispier crust, par-bake the dough for 3 minutes before adding toppings.
Store leftover pizza in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat in a 375°F oven.
