Ingredients
- 1 cup long-grain white rice (such as jasmine or basmati)
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vegetable oil or butter (optional)
Instructions
- Place rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear (about 30 seconds). Drain well.
- In a medium saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, combine rinsed rice, water, salt, and oil (if using). Bring to a boil over high heat.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18 minutes. Do not lift the lid during cooking.
- Remove from heat and let stand, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork and serve.
Tips
- For firmer rice, reduce water by 2 tablespoons; for softer rice, increase by 2 tablespoons.
- Leftover rice can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
