Ingredients
1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine, such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot
1/2 cup vodka or aquavit (optional)
1/2 cup sugar, or to taste
1 cinnamon stick
5 whole cloves
5 whole cardamom pods, lightly crushed
1 piece fresh ginger (about 1 inch), sliced
1 strip orange zest (about 3 inches)
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup blanched almonds
Instructions
In a large pot, combine the red wine, vodka (if using), sugar, cinnamon stick, cloves, cardamom pods, ginger, and orange zest.
Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is hot but not boiling (about 170°F or 75°C). Do not let it boil.
Reduce heat to low and let the mixture steep for at least 15 minutes, up to 30 minutes, to allow the flavors to meld.
Strain the mulled wine through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean pot or heatproof pitcher, discarding the solids.
Serve warm in mugs or small glasses, garnishing each serving with a few raisins and almonds.
Tips
For a non-alcoholic version, substitute the wine with grape juice and omit the vodka.
Leftover glögg can be refrigerated and reheated gently.
Adjust sweetness by adding more or less sugar to taste.
Serve with gingerbread cookies or pepparkakor for a classic pairing.
