Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (28-ounce) can San Marzano tomatoes, crushed by hand
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste (optional, for richness)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.
- Add crushed tomatoes, salt, pepper, and oregano. Stir in tomato paste if using.
- Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Cook uncovered for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens.
- Remove from heat and stir in fresh basil. Taste and adjust seasoning.
- Use immediately or let cool and store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Tips
- For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender before adding basil.
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
- To enhance flavor, add a pinch of sugar if the tomatoes are too acidic.
