Ingredients
1 cup water
2 black tea bags (or 2 tsp loose leaf black tea)
2 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
2 whole cloves
1 small cinnamon stick (or 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon)
1 thin slice fresh ginger (about 1/4 inch)
1 tablespoon honey or sugar (adjust to taste)
1/2 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
Ice cubes
Instructions
In a small saucepan, combine water, cardamom pods, cloves, cinnamon stick, and ginger. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
Remove from heat, add tea bags, and steep for 3-5 minutes depending on desired strength.
Strain the spiced tea into a heatproof cup, discarding solids. Stir in honey or sugar until dissolved. Let cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until chilled, about 30 minutes, or speed up by placing in the freezer for 10 minutes.
Fill a tall glass with ice cubes. Pour the chilled spiced tea over the ice.
In a small bowl or measuring cup, froth the milk using a milk frother, whisk, or by shaking in a jar. Pour the frothed milk over the tea.
Stir gently to combine. Serve immediately.
Tips
For a stronger chai flavor, steep the tea and spices longer, up to 10 minutes.
To make a larger batch, multiply ingredients and store the spiced tea concentrate in the fridge for up to a week.
Adjust sweetness to your preference; you can also use maple syrup or agave.
For a dairy-free version, use oat, almond, or coconut milk.
