Ingredients
1 cup milk (dairy or plant-based)
2 tablespoons cocoa powder (for hot chocolate) or 1 chai tea bag (for chai latte)
1-2 teaspoons sweetener (sugar, honey, or maple syrup), to taste
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional: pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or cayenne (for hot chocolate) or 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger, cardamom, and cinnamon (for chai)
Instructions
In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until steaming, but not boiling.
For hot chocolate: Whisk in cocoa powder, sweetener, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add optional spices if desired. Continue to heat for 1-2 minutes, whisking occasionally.
For chai latte: Add the chai tea bag and optional spices to the hot milk. Reduce heat to low and steep for 3-5 minutes, then remove tea bag. Stir in sweetener and vanilla.
Pour into a mug and serve hot. Optionally, top with whipped cream or a sprinkle of cinnamon.
Tips
For a frothier drink, blend the hot mixture in a blender for 10 seconds before serving.
To make a larger batch, multiply ingredients and serve in a teapot or pitcher.
Store leftover chai latte base in the fridge for up to 2 days; reheat gently.
