Ingredients
- 2 slices bread (white, whole wheat, or sourdough)
- 2 slices deli ham (about 2 oz total)
- 1 slice cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or your choice)
- 1 tablespoon butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
Instructions
- Lay bread slices on a cutting board. Spread butter on one side of each slice. If using mustard, spread on the unbuttered side of one slice.
- Place ham on the unbuttered side of the mustard-smeared slice, folding to fit. Top with cheese slice.
- Close sandwich with the other bread slice, buttered side out.
- Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place sandwich in pan and cook until golden brown on the bottom, about 2-3 minutes.
- Flip carefully and cook until second side is golden brown and cheese is melted, another 2-3 minutes. Serve hot.
Tips
- For extra flavor, add a slice of tomato or a few leaves of lettuce after cooking.
- Use a panini press for a grilled effect without flipping.
- If you prefer open-faced, toast bread first, then broil with ham and cheese until bubbly.
