Ingredients
- 4 slices thick bread (brioche or challah)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Instructions
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- Heat a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon butter.
- Dip each bread slice into the egg mixture, letting it soak for about 10 seconds per side. Allow excess to drip off.
- Place soaked bread in the hot skillet. Cook until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side. Add remaining butter as needed.
- Serve immediately with maple syrup, fresh fruit, or powdered sugar.
Tips
- For extra richness, use half-and-half instead of milk.
- Day-old bread works best as it absorbs the custard without getting too soggy.
- Keep cooked French toast warm in a 200°F oven while cooking the rest.
