Ingredients
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 black tea bags (or 2 tsp loose leaf black tea)
- 2 whole green cardamom pods, crushed
- 2 whole cloves
- 1 small cinnamon stick
- 1 thin slice fresh ginger
- 1/2 cup milk (any kind)
- 1-2 tsp sugar or sweetener of choice, to taste
- 1 shot espresso (or 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee)
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, combine water, tea bags, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon stick, and ginger. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes, allowing the spices to infuse.
- Add milk and sugar, and stir. Increase heat to medium and bring to a gentle simmer, then remove from heat.
- Strain the chai through a fine-mesh sieve into a mug, discarding spices and tea bags.
- Prepare a shot of espresso (or strong coffee) and pour it into the chai. Stir gently to combine.
- Optional: Froth additional milk and spoon on top for a creamier latte.
Tips
- For a vegan version, use plant-based milk like oat or almond.
- Adjust sweetness and spice levels to your preference.
- Make a larger batch of chai concentrate and refrigerate for up to a week.
