Ingredients
1 large round sourdough or artisan bread loaf (about 1 lb)
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
1 cup warm milk (110°F)
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
1 large egg
1 teaspoon salt
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, for brushing
Instructions
Make the rolls: In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk with 1 tablespoon sugar; let stand 5 minutes until foamy.
Add remaining sugar, 1/4 cup melted butter, egg, salt, and 2 cups flour; beat until smooth. Gradually add remaining flour to form a soft dough.
Knead on a floured surface for 6-8 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
Punch down dough. Divide into 12 equal pieces; shape each into a ball. Place on a greased baking sheet, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake rolls for 12-15 minutes until golden. Brush with melted butter and cool on a wire rack.
Prepare the basket: Using a serrated knife, cut a 1-inch thick slice from the top of the large bread loaf. Hollow out the inside, leaving a 1/2-inch thick shell. Reserve the removed bread for another use.
Fill the hollowed loaf with the baked rolls, arranging them snugly. Serve warm.
Tips
The hollowed bread shell can be made a day ahead and stored in an airtight container.
If the rolls are too large, cut them in half before filling the basket.
Serve with softened butter or honey butter on the side.
