Ingredients
2 slices crusty bread (such as ciabatta or sourdough)
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
3 ounces cured ham (such as prosciutto or Bayonne), thinly sliced
2 ounces Gruyère cheese, thinly sliced
Instructions
Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
Spread butter on one side of each bread slice. Spread Dijon mustard on the other side of each slice.
Layer the ham and cheese on the mustard side of one bread slice. Top with the other bread slice, buttered side up.
Place the sandwich in the hot skillet and cook until the bottom is golden brown and the cheese begins to melt, about 2-3 minutes.
Flip the sandwich carefully and cook the other side until golden brown and the cheese is fully melted, another 2-3 minutes.
Remove from skillet, let rest for 1 minute, then slice in half and serve warm.
Tips
For extra flavor, add a few cornichons or a handful of arugula before closing the sandwich.
If you don't have a skillet, you can use a panini press or a sandwich maker.
