Ingredients
1 box (15.25 oz) white cake mix
1 cup (8 oz) orange soda (not diet)
1/2 cup vegetable oil
3 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon orange zest
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
4 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup orange juice
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 drop red food coloring (optional)
2 drops yellow food coloring (optional)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking pan.
In a large bowl, combine cake mix, orange soda, oil, eggs, vanilla, and orange zest. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes until smooth.
Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 28-32 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely in pan on a wire rack.
For the frosting: In a large bowl, beat butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with orange juice, beating on low speed until combined. Add vanilla and food colorings if desired; beat on high until fluffy, about 2 minutes.
Frost the cooled cake evenly. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to set the frosting.
Tips
Use a clear orange soda for best flavor; avoid diet or flavored sodas.
Store leftover cake covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
For a more intense orange flavor, add 1 teaspoon orange extract to the frosting.
