Ingredients
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pound ground beef (80/20)
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
1/2 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
2 cloves garlic, minced
3/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
4 hamburger buns, split and toasted
Instructions
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned, about 5 minutes.
Add onion, bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are softened, about 3 minutes. Drain excess fat if desired.
Stir in ketchup, water, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Cook, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens, about 10 minutes.
Spoon the meat mixture onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns. Top with the other bun halves and serve immediately.
Tips
For a spicier version, add a dash of hot sauce or red pepper flakes.
Leftover sloppy joe mixture can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
Serve with pickles and potato chips for a classic meal.
