Ingredients
8 slices (1-inch thick) brioche or challah bread
4 large eggs
1 cup whole milk
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, for frying
Instructions
In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
Heat a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon butter.
Dip each bread slice into the egg mixture, turning to coat both sides. Let excess drip off.
Place soaked bread in the hot skillet. Cook until golden brown on the bottom, about 2-3 minutes.
Flip and cook the other side until golden brown, another 2-3 minutes. Repeat with remaining bread, adding more butter as needed.
Serve immediately with maple syrup, fresh berries, or powdered sugar.
Tips
Use day-old bread for best texture; it absorbs the custard without getting too soggy.
For extra richness, substitute half-and-half for milk.
Keep cooked French toast warm in a 200°F oven while cooking the rest.
