Ingredients
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup water
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups whole milk
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 large egg yolks
6 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups heavy cream
1/4 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional: chocolate shavings for garnish
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
Make the cake: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, 1 cup sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Add water, oil, vinegar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla; mix until smooth. Pour into prepared pan.
Bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Once cool, cut into 1-inch cubes.
Make the custard: In a medium saucepan, whisk together 1/2 cup sugar, cornstarch, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. In a separate bowl, whisk egg yolks and milk. Gradually whisk milk mixture into dry ingredients.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and bubbling, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat. Add chopped chocolate and 2 teaspoons vanilla; stir until smooth. Transfer to a bowl, cover surface with plastic wrap, and refrigerate until cold, about 1 hour.
Make the whipped cream: In a large bowl, beat heavy cream, powdered sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla until stiff peaks form.
Assemble the trifle: In a large glass trifle dish or bowl, layer one-third of the cake cubes. Top with one-third of the chocolate custard, then one-third of the whipped cream. Repeat layers twice more.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow flavors to meld. Garnish with chocolate shavings before serving.
Tips
For a quicker version, use store-bought chocolate pudding and brownie cubes.
Trifle can be made a day ahead; keep refrigerated.
Add a splash of liqueur like Kahlua or Grand Marnier to the cake cubes for an adult version.
