Ingredients
1 1/2 pounds ground beef (80/20)
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
4 slices American cheese
4 hamburger buns, split
4 leaves lettuce
4 slices tomato
4 slices red onion
4 tablespoons ketchup
4 tablespoons mustard
4 pickle spears
Instructions
Preheat a grill or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat.
Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape into patties about 3/4 inch thick. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
Grill or cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side for medium doneness, or until desired doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty and cover to melt.
Toast the buns on the grill or in the skillet until lightly golden, about 30 seconds.
Assemble the burgers: on the bottom bun, place a lettuce leaf, a tomato slice, a cheese-topped patty, a red onion slice, and a pickle spear. Spread ketchup and mustard on the top bun, then place on top.
Serve immediately.
Tips
For best results, avoid pressing down on the patties while cooking to keep them juicy.
Let the patties rest for a few minutes after cooking to redistribute juices.
Customize with your favorite toppings like bacon, avocado, or sautéed mushrooms.
