Ingredients
- 2 slices white or whole wheat bread
- 1 tablespoon butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
- 2 slices deli ham (about 2 oz total)
- 2 slices Swiss or cheddar cheese (about 2 oz total)
Instructions
- Spread butter on one side of each bread slice. If using mustard, spread on the unbuttered side of one slice.
- Layer ham and cheese on the unbuttered side of the bread slice with mustard, then top with the other bread slice, buttered side up.
- Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the sandwich in the skillet and cook until golden brown on the bottom, about 2-3 minutes.
- Flip the sandwich carefully and cook until the other side is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 2-3 minutes more.
- Remove from heat, let cool for a minute, then slice in half and serve warm.
Tips
- For extra flavor, add a slice of tomato or a few leaves of fresh spinach before cooking.
- To make it a grilled cheese with ham, use your favorite melting cheese like mozzarella or provolone.
