Ingredients
1 cup water
2 black tea bags (or 2 teaspoons loose leaf black tea)
2 whole green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
2 whole cloves
1 small cinnamon stick (or 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon)
1 thin slice fresh ginger (about 1/4 inch)
1 tablespoon honey or sugar (adjust to taste)
1/2 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
Ice cubes
Instructions
In a small saucepan, combine water, tea bags, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and ginger. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let steep for 2-3 minutes.
Strain the tea through a fine-mesh sieve into a heatproof cup or glass. Stir in honey or sugar until dissolved. Let cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until chilled, about 30 minutes, or use immediately over ice.
Fill a tall glass with ice cubes. Pour the chilled chai concentrate over the ice.
Top with milk and stir well. Adjust sweetness if needed. Serve immediately.
Tips
For a stronger chai flavor, use 3 tea bags or increase steeping time.
To make a dairy-free version, use oat milk or almond milk.
Double the recipe to make a batch; store chai concentrate in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
