Ingredients
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
4 cups powdered sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2-4 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
Instructions
In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy, about 2 minutes.
Gradually add the powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating on low speed until combined after each addition.
Add the vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons of milk or cream. Beat on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes. If needed, add more milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, to reach desired consistency.
Use immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Bring to room temperature and re-whip before using.
Tips
For a chocolate frosting, add 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder with the powdered sugar.
For a stiffer frosting (for piping), use less milk; for a thinner glaze, add more milk.
If frosting is too sweet, add a pinch of salt to balance.
