Ingredients
2 cups whole milk
1/2 cup granulated sugar
4 large egg yolks
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks until smooth.
Gradually whisk in milk until fully combined.
Place saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon or whisk, until mixture thickens and just begins to bubble, about 5-7 minutes.
Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
Pour custard through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl to remove any lumps.
Cover surface directly with plastic wrap to prevent a skin from forming. Let cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until chilled, at least 2 hours.
Tips
For a richer custard, replace 1/2 cup milk with heavy cream.
Use immediately for warm trifle, or chill for a cold dessert.
