Ingredients
1 lb ground breakfast sausage
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups whole milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 can (16.3 oz) refrigerated buttermilk biscuits (8 count)
1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook sausage, breaking it up, until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Do not drain.
Sprinkle flour over sausage and stir to coat. Cook for 1 minute.
Gradually whisk in milk, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat.
Cut each biscuit into 6 pieces. Arrange half of the biscuit pieces in the bottom of the prepared dish. Pour half of the sausage gravy over them. Sprinkle with half of the cheese. Repeat layers with remaining biscuits, gravy, and cheese.
Bake for 20-25 minutes, until biscuits are golden and gravy is bubbly. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.
Tips
Use spicy sausage for extra heat.
Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven.
Add a dash of hot sauce or red pepper flakes for a kick.
