Ingredients
4 medium apples (such as Gala or Fuji), peeled, cored, and chopped
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
Instructions
In a medium saucepan, combine the chopped apples, water, and lemon juice.
Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very soft.
Remove from heat and mash the apples with a potato masher or fork for a chunky sauce, or blend with an immersion blender for a smooth sauce.
Stir in cinnamon if desired. Let cool slightly before serving or storing.
Tips
For a sweeter sauce, add 1-2 tablespoons of maple syrup or honey after cooking.
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
Serve warm or cold over pancakes, oatmeal, or pork chops.
