Ingredients
- 10 medium apples (mix of sweet and tart, e.g., Fuji and Granny Smith), quartered
- 1 orange, sliced
- 4 cinnamon sticks
- 1 tablespoon whole cloves
- 1 teaspoon whole allspice berries
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed (optional, adjust to taste)
- 8 cups water
Instructions
- Place quartered apples, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice, and brown sugar (if using) in a large pot.
- Add water and bring to a boil over high heat.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Mash apples with a potato masher to extract more flavor.
- Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a large bowl or pitcher, pressing on solids to extract liquid.
- Discard solids. Serve warm or chilled. If desired, garnish with cinnamon sticks or apple slices.
Tips
- Adjust sweetness by adding more or less brown sugar.
- Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Reheat before serving.
- For a non-alcoholic version, skip any optional alcohol additions.
