Ingredients
1 lb pizza dough, room temperature
2 tbsp olive oil, divided
1/2 lb sweet Italian sausage, casings removed
1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 small onion, thinly sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup pizza sauce
1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 tsp dried oregano
Salt and black pepper to taste
Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 475°F (245°C) with a pizza stone or inverted baking sheet inside for at least 30 minutes.
Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add sausage and cook, breaking into crumbles, until browned (5-7 minutes). Transfer to a plate.
In the same skillet, add remaining 1 tbsp olive oil. Sauté bell peppers and onion until softened and lightly charred (8-10 minutes). Add garlic and cook 1 minute more. Season with salt and pepper.
On a floured surface, stretch or roll pizza dough into a 12-inch round. Transfer to a floured pizza peel or parchment paper.
Spread pizza sauce evenly over dough, leaving a 1-inch border. Top with mozzarella, then cooked sausage and pepper mixture. Sprinkle with Parmesan and oregano.
Slide pizza onto preheated stone or baking sheet. Bake until crust is golden and cheese is bubbly (12-15 minutes).
Let cool 5 minutes, then slice. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.
Tips
For a crispier crust, par-bake the dough for 3 minutes before adding toppings.
Substitute hot Italian sausage for a spicier version.
Leftover pizza can be reheated in a 375°F oven for 5-7 minutes.
