Ingredients
1 (4-5 pound) bone-in pork shoulder
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon smoked paprika
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon onion powder
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
1 cup apple cider vinegar
1 cup chicken broth
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
Mix brown sugar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne in a small bowl. Rub the mixture all over the pork shoulder.
Place the pork in a slow cooker. Pour apple cider vinegar, chicken broth, and Worcestershire sauce around the pork (not over the rub).
Cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 5-6 hours, until the pork is fork-tender and easily shreds.
Remove the pork from the slow cooker and let rest for 10 minutes. Shred with two forks, discarding the bone and any excess fat.
Optional: Skim fat from the cooking liquid and serve the shredded pork with some of the liquid for moisture.
Tips
For extra flavor, sear the pork shoulder in a hot skillet before slow cooking.
Serve on buns with coleslaw and barbecue sauce.
Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days or frozen for 3 months.
