  2. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, water, and salt. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves.
  3. Attach a candy thermometer and bring mixture to a boil without stirring. Cook until temperature reaches 300°F (hard crack stage), about 10-12 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and quickly stir in piñon nuts, vanilla, and butter until combined.
  5. Immediately stir in baking soda; mixture will foam. Pour onto prepared baking sheet and spread quickly with a greased spatula to desired thinness.
  6. Let cool completely, about 30 minutes, then break into pieces.
