Ingredients
2 cups whole milk
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
1/4 cup crushed peppermint candies or candy canes
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 tablespoon powdered sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
In a medium saucepan, whisk together milk, cocoa powder, and sugar. Heat over medium heat, whisking frequently, until hot but not boiling, about 5 minutes.
Remove from heat and stir in peppermint extract. Taste and add more extract if desired.
Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, beat heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract with an electric mixer until soft peaks form.
Pour hot chocolate into two mugs. Top each with a generous dollop of whipped cream and sprinkle with crushed peppermint candies.
Serve immediately.
Tips
For a dairy-free version, use almond or oat milk and coconut cream.
