Ingredients
1 lb (450g) spaghetti or other long pasta
2 tbsp olive oil
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20)
1 can (28 oz / 800g) crushed tomatoes
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
Grated Parmesan cheese for serving
Instructions
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook pasta according to package directions until al dente. Reserve 1 cup pasta water, then drain.
While pasta cooks, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook 1 minute more.
Add ground beef to the skillet. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat if desired.
Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add the drained pasta to the skillet with the sauce. Toss to coat, adding reserved pasta water a little at a time if needed to loosen the sauce.
Remove from heat. Stir in fresh basil. Serve immediately with grated Parmesan cheese.
Tips
For a richer flavor, use a mix of ground beef and Italian sausage.
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
