Ingredients
2 ounces bourbon or rye whiskey
1 sugar cube (or 1 teaspoon granulated sugar)
2 dashes Angostura bitters
1 orange peel strip
1 maraschino cherry (optional)
Ice cubes (preferably one large cube or a few smaller ones)
Instructions
Place the sugar cube in an Old Fashioned glass. Add the bitters and a splash of water (about 1 teaspoon). Muddle until the sugar is dissolved.
Fill the glass with ice cubes, preferably one large ice cube to minimize dilution.
Pour the whiskey over the ice and stir gently for about 20 seconds to chill and combine.
Express the orange peel over the glass by twisting it to release oils, then rub the rim of the glass with the peel and drop it in.
Garnish with a maraschino cherry if desired. Serve immediately.
Tips
Use a large ice cube to slow dilution and keep the drink colder longer.
For a sweeter Old Fashioned, add an extra 1/2 teaspoon of simple syrup instead of the sugar cube.
Store any leftover simple syrup in the refrigerator for up to a month.
