Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
- 1 (28-ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes, crushed by hand
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute, without browning.
- Add crushed tomatoes, salt, pepper, oregano, and red pepper flakes. Stir to combine.
- Bring sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Cook uncovered for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
- Remove from heat and stir in fresh basil. Adjust seasoning to taste.
Tips
- For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender or transfer to a blender and puree before adding basil.
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
