Ingredients
4 medium apples (such as Gala or Fuji), peeled, cored, and chopped
1/4 cup water
2 tablespoons granulated sugar (optional, adjust to taste)
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Instructions
In a medium saucepan, combine the chopped apples, water, sugar (if using), cinnamon, and lemon juice.
Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until apples are very soft.
Remove from heat and mash the apples with a potato masher or fork to desired consistency (smooth or chunky).
Let cool slightly before serving. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
Tips
For a smoother applesauce, blend with an immersion blender or in a regular blender.
Add more cinnamon or a pinch of nutmeg for extra flavor.
