Ingredients
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
4 cups powdered sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2-3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
Instructions
In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy, about 2 minutes.
Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating on low speed until combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
Add the vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream. Beat on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes. If the frosting is too thick, add the remaining tablespoon of cream.
Use immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Bring to room temperature and re-whip before using.
Tips
For chocolate frosting, add 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder with the powdered sugar.
To make ahead, store in the refrigerator and let come to room temperature before re-whipping.
Use gel food coloring for vibrant colors without thinning the frosting.
