Ingredients
- 1 slice bread (white, whole wheat, or sourdough)
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Using a round cookie cutter (about 2.5 inches) or a small glass, cut a hole in the center of the bread slice. Reserve the cut-out piece.
- In a non-stick skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Place the bread slice (and the cut-out piece) in the skillet.
- Crack the egg directly into the hole in the bread. Cook until the egg white is set and the bottom is golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
- Carefully flip the bread and egg using a spatula. Cook for another 1-2 minutes for a runny yolk, or longer if desired.
- Season with salt and pepper. Serve immediately, with the cut-out piece on the side for dipping.
Tips
- For a crispy exterior, use a generous amount of butter.
- If you prefer a fully cooked yolk, cover the pan with a lid after flipping and cook for an additional minute.
- Customize by adding cheese, herbs, or a sprinkle of paprika before flipping.
