Ingredients
3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
1 1/4 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon sugar
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
1 cup warm water (110°F)
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
1/4 cup olive oil
1 pound mozzarella cheese, sliced
1/2 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
1 cup sliced mushrooms
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
1 1/2 cups crushed tomatoes (canned)
2 tablespoons tomato paste
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water; let stand 5 minutes until foamy.
In a large bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, and salt. Add yeast mixture, melted butter, and olive oil; mix until dough forms. Knead on floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth. Place in oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in warm place for 1 hour until doubled.
While dough rises, cook sausage in a skillet over medium heat until browned; remove and set aside. In same skillet, sauté mushrooms, onion, and bell pepper until softened, about 5 minutes.
Preheat oven to 425°F. Press dough into a deep-dish pizza pan (12-inch) and up the sides. Layer sliced mozzarella over dough, then cooked sausage and sautéed vegetables.
In a small bowl, combine crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, garlic, oregano, and basil. Spread sauce evenly over toppings. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top.
Bake on bottom rack for 30-35 minutes until crust is golden and filling is bubbly. Let cool 10 minutes before slicing.
Tips
For a vegetarian version, omit sausage and add extra vegetables like spinach or bell peppers.
Leftover pizza can be reheated in a 350°F oven for 10 minutes.
