Ingredients
1 cup warm water (110°F)
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup warm milk (110°F)
Instructions
In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Add yeast mixture, butter, and warm milk. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
Punch down dough and shape into a loaf. Place in a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes.
Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake bread for 30-35 minutes, until golden brown and hollow when tapped. Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Tips
For a softer crust, brush the top of the hot loaf with melted butter after baking.
Store bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
