Ingredients
1.5 lbs (680g) ground beef (80/20)
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tsp garlic powder
4 slices American cheese (optional)
4 hamburger buns
4 leaves lettuce
4 slices tomato
4 slices red onion
ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, pickles (to taste)
Instructions
Divide ground beef into 4 equal portions (about 6 oz each). Gently shape into patties slightly larger than the buns, about 3/4 inch thick. Make a small indent in the center of each patty to prevent puffing.
Season both sides of patties with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
Heat a grill, grill pan, or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 3-4 minutes per side for medium, or until desired doneness. If making cheeseburgers, place a slice of cheese on each patty during the last minute of cooking and cover to melt.
While patties cook, lightly toast the buns on the grill or in a toaster.
Assemble burgers: spread condiments on bun bottoms, then add lettuce, tomato, onion, patty, and pickles. Close with bun tops and serve immediately.
Tips
For best results, use 80/20 ground beef for juiciness.
Let patties rest for 2 minutes after cooking to redistribute juices.
Customize with bacon, sautéed mushrooms, or avocado.
