Ingredients
1.5 lbs (680g) ground beef (80/20)
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tsp garlic powder
4 slices American cheese
4 hamburger buns
4 leaves lettuce
4 slices tomato
4 slices red onion
8 pickle slices
ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise to taste
Instructions
Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions (about 6 oz each). Gently shape into patties about 3/4 inch thick, making a slight indentation in the center with your thumb. Season both sides with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
Preheat a grill, grill pan, or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grates or pan.
Cook patties for 4 minutes on the first side. Flip, then immediately top each patty with a slice of cheese. Cook for another 3-4 minutes for medium doneness (internal temp 160°F for well done).
During the last minute of cooking, toast the buns cut-side down on the grill or in a separate pan until lightly golden.
Assemble burgers: spread condiments on bun bottoms, add lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, then the patty with cheese. Close with bun tops and serve immediately.
Tips
Handle the meat as little as possible for a tender patty.
Let the patties rest for 2 minutes after cooking to reabsorb juices.
Customize with bacon, sautéed mushrooms, or a fried egg.
