Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water with a pinch of sugar; let stand 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine milk, 1/4 cup sugar, 1/3 cup melted butter, egg, and salt. Add yeast mixture and 2 cups flour; beat until smooth. Gradually add remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn dough onto floured surface; knead 6-8 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in greased bowl, cover, and let rise in warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  4. Mix 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon for filling. Punch down dough; roll into a 12x20-inch rectangle. Brush with 1/4 cup melted butter; sprinkle evenly with cinnamon-sugar.
  5. Cut dough into 6 strips lengthwise (about 3 inches wide), then stack strips on top of each other. Cut stack into 6 squares. Place squares on edge in a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan, arranging them like a stack of dominoes.
  6. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30-45 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  7. Bake 30-35 minutes until golden brown. Cool in pan 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire rack. Serve warm.
