Ingredients
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 cup water
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Instructions
In a medium saucepan, whisk together the heavy cream, sugar, cocoa powder, water, and salt. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, whisking constantly.
Reduce heat to low and add the chopped chocolate. Whisk until the chocolate is completely melted and the sauce is smooth.
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and butter until the butter is melted and incorporated.
Let the sauce cool slightly before serving. It will thicken as it cools.
Tips
Store leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Reheat gently before serving.
For a thinner sauce, add a little more water or cream. For a thicker sauce, cook a bit longer.
This sauce can be made dairy-free by using coconut cream and dairy-free butter.
