Ingredients
1 cup warm water (110°F)
1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
1 tbsp granulated sugar
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
1/2 cup chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate
1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/4 cup granulated sugar for topping
1 egg, beaten (for wash)
Coarse sea salt for sprinkling
Instructions
In a small bowl, dissolve yeast and 1 tbsp sugar in warm water; let stand 5 minutes until foamy.
In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and 2 tbsp melted butter; stir until dough forms. Knead on floured surface 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in greased bowl, cover, let rise 1 hour until doubled.
Meanwhile, melt chocolate chips with 1/4 cup butter in a microwave or double boiler; stir until smooth. Let cool slightly.
Punch down dough. Roll into a 12x8 inch rectangle. Spread chocolate mixture evenly over dough, leaving a 1/2 inch border. Roll tightly from long side into a log; pinch seam to seal.
Cut log into 12 equal pieces. Stretch each piece into a 6-inch rope, then twist into a pretzel shape. Place on parchment-lined baking sheets.
Brush twists with beaten egg; sprinkle with coarse salt and remaining sugar. Let rise 20 minutes.
Preheat oven to 400°F. Bake 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Cool on wire rack.
Tips
For extra chocolate flavor, use chocolate chunks instead of chips.
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
Twists can be frozen before baking; bake from frozen, adding 2-3 minutes.
